What do you notice when meeting someone for the first time? More often than not, it’s their smile!

First impressions are forever, and you never do get that second chance to make good first impression. A job interview, a first date, or being the speaker at an important meeting all involve your smile. Why not make a good “first impression” by correcting or enhancing your smile! It’s easier than ever with the advances that have been made in Periodontal Plastic Surgery.

According to the American Academy of Periodontology, a recent poll revealed that 50 percent of people polled consider the smile the first facial feature they notice, and 50 percent of the people are not happy with their smile. In this poll participants also stated that they would be seven times more likely to have periodontal smile enhancement procedures than face-lifts. Finally they reported that periodontal smile enhancement procedures outnumber eyelid surgeries five to one.

Cosmetic smile improvement is now more popular than ever. As Americans live longer and age more gracefully new techniques have been perfected to maintain a youthful smile. Do you feel that your smile is too gummy or that your gums cover too much of some teeth and just enough of other teeth? A procedure called Crown Lengthening might be a first-class solution for you. With this procedure a very small area of gum tissue is removed or reshaped around the crown of the tooth. In our office this is often accomplished with a Laser and there is no need for incisions or sutures (stitches). This procedure evens out the gum line and creates a beautiful smile.

Periodontal plastic procedures can also address the problem of Gum Recession that often makes you appear older than you are. When gums recede your tooth appears longer and the root area is exposed. Often times teeth with exposed root surfaces become very sensitive. This exposed root area also becomes more vulnerable to decay. Gum tissue recession is caused by several factors and Periodontal Disease is one of the main causes. Soft Tissue Grafts correct this problem. Grafting covers the root, protects the roots from decay and creates a more youthful smile.

Indentations in the gum and bone are also problems that can be corrected with periodontal plastic surgery. Sometimes when a tooth is lost unnatural indentations develop. This occurs because the jawbone shrinks in the area where the tooth is lost. These indentations or ridges make it difficult to fabricate new natural looking tooth replacements. With periodontal ridge augmentation the indentation can be filled and the tooth can be replaced in a very natural fashion.

Often times Dr. DeTure will combine several procedures to give you the smile that you have always wanted. Many of the newer procedures are performed in one visit and following a brief healing time you will be flashing a more confident attractive smile. By talking with Dr. DeTure a perfect plan can be created just for you. The technology has arrived and you can put a plan in motion!
