Laser Gum Disease Treatment
Laser periodontal treatment offers relief for those suffering from moderate to severe gum disease. Patients can schedule laser dentistry with for gum disease treatment in Jupiter, FL. The Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®) is performed without scalpels or sutures in the following basic steps:
- Assessment of periodontal damage
- Removal of bacteria and diseased tissue
- Elimination of calculus
- Laser stimulation
- Compression of tissue and bite evaluation
To begin the laser dentistry procedure, Dr. DeTure will evaluate any loss of attachment with regard to gum tissue as well as the depths of your periodontal pockets. Next, the laser is utilized to remove any bacteria and diseased tissue. The laser’s light selectively targets these unwanted elements, leaving healthy tissue unharmed. Therefore, no scalpels or subsequent sutures are necessary in laser dentistry.
At this point, Dr. DeTure will incorporate the use of ultrasonic scalers to remove the calculus from the root surfaces. Calculus is essentially plaque that has accumulated and hardened on your teeth.
Once the calculus has been removed, Dr. DeTure will stimulate the bone, gums, and tooth roots using the laser. This agitation of the treatment area is performed for several reasons. Firstly, it causes the blood to coagulate, forming a healing clot around the teeth thus minimizing bleeding and sealing the area from contaminants. Secondly, using laser dentistry to agitate the bone that surrounds the teeth in this way has been proven to prompt the regeneration of bone.
In the final step of the laser dentistry procedure, Dr. DeTure will compress the gum tissue against the surfaces of the teeth and assess the impact of surgery, adjusting your bite, if necessary.
A LANAP® session may take up to two hours and may be scheduled in two sessions, depending upon the extent and severity of your condition. Call Dr. DeTure today for your LANAP® consultation in Jupiter, FL.
Gum Disease Impacts Your Heart Health
“We all think that cholesterol is important to heart disease. The health of your gums is a more important predictor of whether or not you will have a heart attack or not.”
