2 Non-Surgical Treatments from a Stuart Periodontist

When people think about going to the dentist, they generally have a good idea about what the procedures are. This is true because most people know what dentists do and have been to see their dentists throughout their life.

Periodontists on the other hand, seem to work with a little more of a cloud of mystery surrounding them. Periodontist work to help patients with some procedures and forms of TEETH STRAIGHTENING, implants, their advancing gum disease, and other issues that are beyond the scope of work of most dentists.

For many, this may mean surgical procedures to 'fix issues' but not always. Here are 2 non-surgical treatments provided by our doctors in our Stuart, Florida office.

Scaling and Planing

Scaling and root planing is a nonsurgical periodontal treatment that is typically recommended when periodontal disease is diagnosed.

Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease, affects only the gum tissues, and is completely reversible if detected and treated early. If left untreated, however, it can progress into the deeper tissues and potentially cause bone and tooth loss.

Many patients who have gingivitis or more advanced stages of periodontal disease often experience bleeding and sore gums when brushing, flossing, and eating.

Periodontal Maintenance

While regular cleanings are generally performed at six month intervals, periodontal cleanings are scheduled more frequently. The time between visits is based upon each individual patient’s condition, considering factors such as the rate at which plaque grows on your teeth, method of treatment, and response to treatment.

Periodontal cleanings are more extensive than regular dental cleanings. Your teeth are cleaned both above and below the gum line to remove bacteria and calculus. Your mouth will be evaluated for changes in bite, gum tissue health, and periodontal pocket depths.

It is essential that you inform us of any changes in your health, new medications, and any existing gum pain or symptoms at each visit.
