Getting to Know Your Periodontist

Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, nearly 65 million Americans suffer from gum disease.

And though most people are familiar with their dentist, we still find that many people don't really know what periodontist do. Generally, a periodontist will be the person you visit if your gum disease (also referred to as periodontitis) has advanced to the point that your local dentist is no longer equipped to provide the right kind of treatment.

A recent article in the South Florida Times does a good job of outlining four things you should know if you believe your gum disease has progressed -- and you're feeling pain in your teeth or gums, have continual bleeding of the gums or pockets between your gums and teeth.

Know the cause

Poor dental hygiene is a major factor in the development of gum disease as is genetic issues, smoking, diabetes and heart disease. But generally, poor care -- not flossing or brushing regularly -- can impact your teeth and gums dramatically.

Know your risk

The more we study about the connections between your overall health and the health of your gums, we realize that there are also genetic components to gum disease. Do issues of gum disease run in the family? Is your lifestyle making your susceptible?

Know where to go

The best place to start is generally by talking to your local Private Dentistry expert and visiting their dental office. They can refer you to a periodontist. You can also ask friends and family or seek out periodontists in by checking their websites and reviews.

Know how often to go

It is recommended that adults -- especially older adults -- undergo a comprehensive periodontal evaluation every year to ensure the health of gums and teeth. This can be done by your dentist as well.
